Instagram is everything these days. It’s your personal website, resume and life in squares. People ask me all the time how I get my Instagram looks looking so fresh. It takes a lot of work, and it isn’t easy. But it’s doable if you put in the time and energy.
Here’s my advice on how to master Instagram when it comes to your street style.
1. Define Your Style
Are you preppy, sporty, boho chic or glam? It’s important to distinguish your style and stick to it with your ‘Gram. On my Instagram, you’ll rarely see me in gym clothes. My inner Carrie Bradshaw comes out no matter what I do. I love to play with skirts and colors and anything that makes me feel girly, flirty and fun. Sometimes I want to dress sexy, but not in anything that makes me uncomfortable. I love my heels, my Gucci flats and designer bags mixed with my Zara clothes.
2. Choose a Color Scheme
It’s not just the kind of clothes you wear but the color as well. I like to wear white, blush, pink and black every day. So you’ll always see those colors on my Instagram. They’re the colors I wear naturally when I’m out and about, and it’s nothing that’s outside of my wardrobe.
3. Be Authentic
Be true to yourself when it comes to your wardrobe. Don’t use your clothing to become something you’re not. Get the stuff out of your closet and curate it for the ‘Gram.
4. Schedule What You Wear
Scheduling your clothes is a key to getting your Instagram looking right. If it’s summer, don’t post photos of you wearing a coat. You’ve got to roll with what you’re wearing and when you’re wearing it. Right now on my Instagram, you’ll find me wearing a lot of summer clothes because that’s what I’m wearing in real life and that’s what my followers want to see.
5. Pay Attention to Backgrounds
It’s important to get the background setting for your photos just as perfect as your outfits. A background must match your outfit or at least compliment it.
6. Use Filters
Filters are key to make all your photos align and match. You don’t have to rely only on the filters Instagram gives you. There are lots of photo editing apps you can use to perfect your shots. I use VSCO to play with the colors of my pics. I also use the UNUM app to see what my pics look like when I post all of them. I usually make a calendar and align the pics.
The most important thing is to be yourself. Showcase who you really are. As Rachel Zoe says, “Style is a way to say who you are without having to speak.” That’s something I live by. I’m strong, loud, colorful, risk-taking and fun-loving. Anyone who looks at my Instagram style will be able to see all of that.
What about you guys? How would you describe your style?
